studio momo is the home of my art work; floragraphy, kaua'i and etherea are my flower photograph portfolios.
flowers possess an infinite variety of beauty and elegance. when I begin working on a new piece it is because I was attracted to the ways in which beauty and elegance combined in that flower or bouquet. using one of my photographs as a template, I transform the image of the flower into its basic shapes and outlines. areas of color are then selected and modified. sometimes I mesh those patterns with the textures in the template photograph; other times they stand on their own. the end result captures a single instance of amplified beauty and refined elegance.
calligraphy captivated me from early on. calligraphy taught me that there is a greater power and expression within words in addition to the inherent meaning. this power and expression goes beyond an understanding of the written word and becomes art. I consider the meaning and the art separately, and then work to find ways to combine them. each piece ends as a crystallization of combined meaning and art, bringing the power and expression to the fore.
I constantly find myself experimenting. I find it important to develop and express new techniques that enhance and further the themes of color and movement that I embrace. each piece in this portfolio begins with a very simple idea: a line or shape, a color or palette, a pattern or image. new techniques are used as I experiment. sometimes the end result is merely a statement of technical capability, and it tells the viewer only what I learned to do. but when the end result possesses true color and movement, the piece becomes part of my portfolio.
as always, I welcome your feedback and comments. please write me.
