this piece is based on an old Japanese metaphor for time. the characters, from top to bottom, represent a crow and a rabbit. according to old Japanese legends (and Chinese legends as well), the sun is to home to a mythical three-legged crow, signomen of the emperor, and the moon home for the mythical jade rabbit (in China the rabbit is companion to Chang-E, the moon goddess). as the sun and moon pass, so too, time.
